NH Teams Qualify for International Academic Competition

It’s an academic tournament unlike any other – and Saturday in Nashua, 36 student teams qualified to compete with teams from 15 countries and 48 states at Destination Imagination Global Finals. They bested over 200 teams in New Hampshire to reach this point. These students spent 5 months crafting solutions to challenges focused in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) or Service Learning Challenges. Teams were appraised creativity, problem-solving and collaboration abilities, as well as “think on their feet” problem-solving skills. In the process, teams learn to combine soft skills, such as communication skills with hard knowledge skills – the Future of Work Skills.

The teams select a Challenge at the beginning of the year with a different focus: Technical, Scientific, Structural, Fine Arts, Improvisational, and Service Learning. Destination Imagination is about combining what students learn in school, what they research as a team, and leveraging the team dynamic to drive innovation. All ideas and solutions must be generated by the team without outside interference. The teams that qualify to attend Global Finals are in instant fundraising mode, as it will cost about $10,000 per team to make the trip and are in fundraising mode. This award is given for having a unique approach to a solution, for risk taking, and/or for outstanding creativity. Team: 130-50411 -- Goffstown High School / The Fabled Four Challenge: Escape Artists -- Secondary Level Reason Award was given: This team WOWed the appraisers with their creative integration of their project into an intricate and elaborate tale of characters stuck in other storybooks. They created a beautiful book within a book to share their story of collecting toys and creating IC kits for Boston Children's Hospital. Their beautiful and elaborate storybook backdrop and detailed, excellent costumes enhanced the story and made for a performance we'll remember!

Renaissance Awards

This award is given for outstanding design, engineering, execution, and/or performance. Team: 130-83544 -- Dover DI / Long Distance  Challenge: Monster Effects -- Secondary Level Reason Award was given: This team crafted costuming that was extraordinary in both its realism and its design. Their monster had incredible detail that made it come alive! Their armor, mask, and sword were authentically reproduced. The detail work made everything realistic and highly believable!
