SPECIAL AWARDS, E. SWANZEY TOURNAMENT

DaVinci Award for outstanding creativity.

This award is given for having a unique approach to a solution, for risk taking, and/or for outstanding creativity (not skill or talent).

Griffin Memorial School, Team 130-97936, Challenge: Rising Stars!

The team demonstrated a unique artistic interpretation of a rainbow by using different colored fruits to represent Roy G Biv and in doing so made a delicious snack for all. The appraiser won’t soon forget this team’s colorful creativity.

Hollis DI, Team 130-4777, Challenge: In Disguise, Secondary Level

This team’s evocative performance tackled the universal theme of Nature versus human enterprise. A tree elegantly portrayed a natural ecosystem with falling leaves that showed destruction resulting from human activity. A forest nymph wore an intricate flower mask made of over 900 origami pieces which came apart under the control of an elaborate electromagnetic device as a metaphor for the death of the forest. The appraisers were moved by this unique and beautiful artistic vision.

Renaissance Award for outstanding design, engineering, execution, performance

Conant High School, Team 130-10678, Challenge: Wind Visible, Secondary Level

This team just about had it all. From an innovative pulley system that simulated tree growth to a memorable integration of art and life from the Dust Bowl days. The appraisers were impressed to learn the environmental effects of clear cutting. This team successfully incorporated risky and complex mechanisms thus showing their extraordinary skill of engineering and design.

Hollis, Team 130-47737, Challenge: In The Zone, Middle Level

This “In the Zone” team created a highly-sophisticated launching device utilizing wood, metal, a bungee cord, convex glass lenses, infrared light and microcontrollers. The appraisers were very impressed with the team’s “The Mean-Machine” launching device. This device coupled with the technologically-innovative steering system was able to send their vehicles into the scoring zone with impressive results.

Milford, Challenge: Rising Stars!, Team 130-68191, Elementary Level

Our appraisers have seen a lot of beautiful rainbows in our time but never before had we seen one come together before our eyes, in the form of a mixed media mobile to which each team member contributed an arc of color. The team also WoWed us with their foldable and changeable scenery which evolved throughout their performance.

Conant High School, Team 130-90280, Challenge: In Disguise, Secondary Level

A classic story with both mechanical and plot line twists, this team’s three faced dwarf mask and lifting coffin demonstrated their multiple technical skills and talents. Their seamless performance, humor and the prince’s Hershey kiss left the appraisers wanting more.

Chesterfield School, Team 130-55577, Challenge: In Disguise, Middle Level

This team’s pop-out storybook backdrop with pages that turned to reveal multiple scenes with 3-D elements drew the appraisers into the fairytale. The appraisers were impressed with the team’s use of recycled materials. Trash bags became a beautiful dress; soda cans and egg cartons became a rotating clock tower. The team’s amazing masks, including a scary witch with moving lips, brought their story to life.

Milford Middle School, Team 130-06307, Challenge: Twist-O-Rama, Middle Level

The appraisers and audience were quickly propelled into this skit. The team’s cohesive and well-crafted performance charmed the appraisers. Their panda costumes and working airplane propeller added a great dimension to the performance. The team’s use of humor and word play made this a memorable experience.
