Special Awards

The Renaissance Award for outstanding Design, Engineering, Execution, Performance

Cooperative Middle School
Team: 130-82110
Challenge: Unidentified Moving Object
Level: Middle

To solve this year’s technical challenge, not only do you need to solve the complex task of moving a variety of materials between the top of a 6 foot tower and the pool below, but you also need to fit all the equipment you use in a 20-inch by 20-inch by 20-inch box.

Our appraiser team watched in marvel as a team that would make Jeff Gordon’s NASCAR pit crew proud, unpacked a seven foot gantry complete with hydraulics, electromagnets, and pulleys to move the eight materials.  The solution included a cup that held the golf ball held in place with a hydraulic pin, a vacuum system to pick-up the CD, and an electromagnet to pick up the bolt and washer. This solution demonstrated the team’s impressive ability to integrate multiple disparate technologies.

It was truly a joy to watch the engineering team from Cooperative Middle School (130-82110) deploy this complex solution flawlessly.

South School, Londonderry
Team: 130-66521
Challenge: Triple Take Road Show
Level: Elementary

Triple Take Road Show asks teams to tell the same story to three different pretend audiences, using various storytelling methods.

What if you also take an event that happened at your school—a blue heron eating a koi fish—and turn it into a parody of The Three Little Pigs? That, in fact, is what this team did. This team impressed us with cubed set pieces that were used in multiple ways—they transformed from houses for fish, into a pirate ship, and into an ice cream truck. Paper mache was used to create multiple koi fish costumes that made their story come alive.

What if the story was also told in silence? This team learned sign language and told one version of their story using it.  We were impressed with their dedication to learning a new language, and how seamlessly and beautifully they integrated it into their performance.

The appraisers thank the Elementary team from South School, Londonderry for entertaining us with a skillful and refined performance.

Spirit of Discovery and ImagiNation Award (Spirit of DI)

This award is given in recognition of those who act as superior role models in the areas of spirit, sportsmanship and volunteerism.

Barka Elementary
Team: 130-16635
Challenge: Triple Take Road Show
Level: Elementary

We laughed throughout this team’s performance, especially when they showed unicorns in labor doing breathing exercises! In the prep area our appraiser team found out that this team lost two members in the fall and then another two in February.  This didn’t faze the remaining team members in the least!  Instead, they persevered, producing a performance complete with humor, improv, and duct tape! We were blown away by their positivity, their obvious commitment to each other, and their determination. One team member remarked that on this team, “I found a place where one can channel their weirdness.” This team oozed with their love of DI, even when the wheel on the bus came off.
